Water Line Leak Detection

The test is straightforward in principle: close the shutoff at the building and watch the meter. If the meter continues to register, water is escaping upstream of that valve — on the service line, at the meter connection, or on a branch teed off before the house.

In practice, complications include irrigation lines tapped before the house valve, a shutoff that no longer seals fully, and a second supply point to a pool or outbuilding. Each of these needs to be accounted for before conclusions are drawn.

• At old couplings and previous repair clamps
• At the transition from the meter box into buried pipe
• Where the line crosses under a driveway, sidewalk or slab edge and carries load
• At bends that were stressed during original installation or later landscaping
• Along runs of aging galvanized or polybutylene pipe

Route tracing establishes where the pipe actually runs, which is frequently not the straight line people assume. Acoustic listening at contact points and along the traced route narrows the escape point, and pressure isolation confirms the section. Only then does excavation make sense — one small opening rather than an exploratory trench.
